New Year's
Eve Drone Show
— Jakarta
Jakarta's skyline above Bundaran HI (the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, Indonesia's most recognisable urban landmark), became the canvas for MIRS Drone Show's New Year's Eve performance as 500 drones illuminated the night sky on 31 December 2023. A synchronized aerial show timed to the midnight countdown drew tens of thousands of spectators to one of Southeast Asia's most celebrated New Year's Eve gatherings.
Mission Objective
The Brief
When Jakarta rings in the New Year, Bundaran HI is the heartbeat of the celebration. MIRS Drone Show was commissioned to produce a 500-drone aerial performance timed to the midnight countdown above this iconic roundabout, delivering a precision formation show visible from rooftops, hotel terraces, and street-level crowds across Jakarta's central business district.
The mission: create a New Year's Eve moment that matched the scale and energy of the crowd below. Every formation animated in synchronized drone light above the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, a canvas defined by the circular landmark it framed, the skyline it rose above, and the hundreds of thousands gathered beneath it as the clock counted down to midnight.
Bundaran HI — The Stage
500 drones climbed into the Jakarta night sky above one of Asia's most photographed New Year's Eve venues. The Hotel Indonesia Roundabout's iconic Welcome Statue and fountain, flanked by the Grand Indonesia towers and the Bundaran HI MRT station plaza, created a natural amphitheatre, with aerial formations visible across the skyline from multiple vantage points across the city.
The performance was timed to the midnight countdown, with drone formations building from rooftop staging areas nearby, transitioning from ground-level preparation to full aerial canvas, culminating in synchronized light formations as the clock struck midnight on 31 December 2023.

Creative Performance Design
The Jakarta Countdown Canvas
The creative direction centered on the energy and iconography of Jakarta's New Year: a city of 10 million people converging on one roundabout for one countdown. The formation sequence was built to mirror that escalating energy: opening with aerial grid patterns visible across the central business district, moving through colorful launch bursts and recognisable bird and character formations above the city skyline, and culminating in synchronized choreography timed to the midnight moment.
Bundaran HI's circular geometry provided a natural formation anchor: the Welcome Statue roundabout at its centre, the Jakarta skyline as its backdrop. Every formation was designed to be read from ground level, hotel terraces, and aerial vantage points simultaneously, maximising visual coverage across the venue's scale.

On-Site Execution
Rooftop Staging in Urban Airspace
Drone shows in dense urban environments require a fundamentally different logistics framework from open-field performances. The Jakarta New Year's Eve show positioned its 500-drone fleet across rooftop staging areas near Bundaran HI, requiring precise vehicle routing through Jakarta's New Year's Eve road closures, coordinated pre-flight positioning across multiple rooftop locations, and full pre-launch checks completed before the countdown window opened.
Countdown Synchronization
The performance required precise synchronization between the aerial formation sequence and the midnight countdown. Each formation transition was choreographed to the show's soundtrack and timed to build to the midnight moment, ensuring the drone light show hit its peak formation precisely as Jakarta entered 2024, before recovering and landing safely in the rooftop staging area. Every element, from launch timing to formation transitions to post-show recovery, was pre-planned to execute within the narrow window that a live public countdown demands.
